| Have you made your New Year's Resolutions? That list of things we really ought to do (eat right, exercise and save money) often proves to be a fragile and temporary call to change. But this is a new decade that is dawning on economic challenges and environmental concerns at a scale that we have never before experienced in this country. So perhaps the winter of 2010 is different for energy and for resolutions. Instead of a few months of higher utility bills, this is an unprecedented opportunity for a lasting commitment to energy efficiency resulting in cost savings for your business. Perhaps this is an opportunity to save energy, save money and even save the planet. Make your resolution for energy efficiency and have a happy
new year. | |
Save The Date! 2010 Northwest Industrial Energy Efficiency Summit
Join leading decision makers from industry, government, utilities, associations and academia at the 2010 NW Industrial Energy Efficiency Summit (NW Summit). Presented by Washington State University Extension Energy Program, Bonneville Power Administration and Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, and produced by the Northwest Food Processors Association - the NW Summit was designed to foster the ongoing development and implementation of a collaborative, regional energy strategy that will sustain the vitality of the industrial manufacturing sector in the Northwest.
Top level speakers and industry experts will address the major issues and topics impacting energy efficiency within the region including the 6th Power Plan, US Carbon Legislation, State Level Sustainability, and Customer Driven efforts. Participants will attend facilitated work sessions designed to prioritize and develop commitment to actionable strategies.
David Montgomery, PSE Senior Energy Management Engineer, will speak during the lunch roundtable discussions on the new Process Efficiency Program. This program focuses on industrial sector and other processes such as data center, manufacturing, water/wastewater operation, industrial process, cold storage, industrial exhaust/pollution controls, food processing, and agricultural process. The Process Efficiency Program uses an integrated approach and contains the following components: Energy audit, development grant, low cost measures, capital projects, and measurement and verification. The program incentive will be based on energy savings and up to 70 percent of project cost. Click here to register for the NW Summit, and learn more about this and other new energy-efficiency programs. Registration cost for industry executives is $150 (includes: industry, utilities, government agencies, related associations and academia); and for supplier executives is $250 (includes companies providing energy-efficiency related products and services). |
South King County Wastewater Treatment Plant Receives
Energy Efficiency Grant
PSE awarded the South King County Wastewater Treatment Plant three grants totaling more than $325,000 for energy-efficiency upgrades. The upgrades will provide more than half a million kWh of savings per year, and allow the treatment plant to more efficiently serve over 1.4 million people throughout the Eastside and South King County. The upgrades include a central chiller upgrade and a two-part pre-aeration blower upgrade. In lieu of installing a stand-alone air-cooled chiller for comfort cooling of the treatment plant's new administration building, the central chilled water plant was expanded to meet administrative building cooling loads as well as existing cooling loads at an improved efficiency. While energy efficiency of the new administration building was a primary driver for a chiller upgrade, the project provides a greater benefit to the South Treatment Plant by increasing overall efficiency of the central cooling plant. "With the PSE grant, this chiller efficiency upgrade will pay for itself more than twice with energy cost savings during its lifetime," stated PSE Senior Energy Management Engineer
David Landers. PSE replaced two existing 150-hp constant speed blowers with 100-hp high-efficiency variable speed blowers - moving King County to the latest blower technology. The new blowers utilize air bearings and variable speed drive to provide energy savings of more than 20 percent over the previous technology. The new blowers do not have a gearbox and lubrication system, reducing maintenance costs as well as energy use. Funding for the blower upgrades was provided through the Schedule 250 and 258 Self-Directed Programs. "The pre-aeration blowers would not have been installed without both the grant funds - we really appreciated PSE's flexibility to allow the entire project to get completed," remarked King County Water Treatment District Energy Program Manager Carl Grodnik. Grodnik added, "David Landers helped me understand what PSE needed from us to (1) quantify the energy savings associated with the project, and (2) provide the necessary documentation to support the grant process. We definitely worked hard on our side to make sure everything needed was supplied, but David provided some essential guidance along the way to help smooth out the process."

PSE Introduces Commercial CFL Instant Rebate Program
Now PSE commercial electric customers can receive instant rebates of $3 - $12 from PSE for installing qualifying Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs in their commercial buildings. No more spending time looking for utility rebates and filling out forms. Simply visit a participating commercial lighting vendor, pick up your CFL bulbs, and watch the savings begin. Since lighting often accounts for 40 to 70 percent of building energy use, replacing incandescent light bulbs with CFLs is a great way to save on energy costs. Additionally, ENERGY STARŪ qualified CFLs bulbs can last up to 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs, reducing the long-term energy costs for businesses. For more information on PSE's Commercial CFL Instant Rebate program and to get a current list of participating commercial lighting vendors, visit PSE.com/ForYourBusiness or call a PSE Energy Advisor at 1-800-562-1482. Current vendors include: All Phase Capital Lighting North Coast Electric - Alexander Lighting Plan LED
